The Right Pallet Type for Your Warehouse Operations

Pallets are a foundational tool in logistics and warehousing. They play a critical role in protecting products during storage, maximizing your storage space and ensuring that order handling and inventory management are both efficient and safe.

What is a Pallet and How is it Used?

A pallet is a foundational load carrier and a critical asset in logistics and warehouse management. Designed to support goods, pallets enable seamless moving, storing and transporting of inventory when paired with forklifts and other Material Handling Equipment (MHE). Selecting the right pallet drastically increases operational efficiency, minimizes product damage and reduces supply chain costs.

Matching the correct pallet type to your specific cargo, equipment fleet, such as Counterbalance Forklifts, electric Reach Trucks, or Electric Pallet Trucks—and your Racking System is essential to maximizing throughput and optimizing expenses. To help you select the ideal fit for your operation, pallets can be categorized based on the following key criteria:

1. Pallet Sizes & Standards

Pallet dimensions directly impact warehouse space optimization, aisle width requirements and transport container utilization. Choosing the correct standard size is essential for smooth forklift operations and maximizing load efficiency. The following are the primary global and regional pallet standards:

2. Pallet Material

Pallet materials dictate load-bearing capacity, structural durability, operational lifespan, and sanitation compliance (e.g., ISPM 15 export regulations).

MaterialProsCons/ Limitation/ Requirement
Wooden Pallets
  • Cost-effective and widely available: Highly economical upfront costs and exceptionally easy to source globally.
  • High load capacity and easily repairable: Capable of handling heavy-duty weight and straightforward to repair if damaged.
  • Susceptible to termites, pests and mold: High risk of organic infestations, wood-boring insects and fungal growth if exposed to moisture.
  • Requires mandatory ISPM 15 compliance: Must undergo heat treatment (HT) or fumigation to receive the official ISPM 15 stamp prior to international export.
Plastic Pallets
  • Lightweight with uniform standardization: Exceptionally light, with 100% consistent dimensions that strictly meet global standards.
  • Hygienic and splinter-free: Easy to sanitize and eliminates the risk of wood flakes, dust or protruding nails that can damage products.
  • Resilient in harsh environments: Fully compatible with high-moisture setups, chemical exposure and cold storage environments.
  • Higher upfront cost compared to wooden pallets: Requires a larger initial investment than traditional wood options.
  • Difficult to repair if damaged: Once structural cracking or breakage occurs, the pallet is highly challenging to mend or salvage.
  • Widely preferred in hygiene-sensitive and automated environments: Commonly utilized across the food, pharmaceutical and Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) sectors.
Paper/Cardboard Pallets
  • Lightweight and highly cost-effective for air freight: Significantly reduces tare weight, leading to massive savings on air cargo shipping costs.
  • 100% recyclable and ISPM 15 exempt: Fully sustainable and eco-friendly, with no heat treatment or fumigation stamps required for international customs.
  • Vulnerable to moisture and humidity: Lacks water resistance and will lose its structural integrity if exposed to wet conditions or high humidity.
  • Lower load capacity with limited reuse: Handles significantly less weight than other pallet types and is primarily designed for single-use or limited-cycle shipping.
Metal Pallets
  • Maximum durability and an exceptional lifespan: The most robust option available on the market, offering a significantly longer service life compared to any other pallet type.
  • Engineered for heavy-duty load handling: Built to withstand ultra-heavy capacities and easily support the most demanding, heavyweight industrial items.
  • Highest price point and significant tare weight: Requires the highest initial investment among all pallet types and adds substantial weight to shipments.
  • Widely utilized in heavy industrial sectors: Heavily preferred in the automotive, heavy metal and high-density manufacturing industries for transporting ultra-heavyweight goods.

3. Pallet Entry Direction

Pallet entry direction is determined by how a lift truck accesses the load inside the racking system. The two primary criteria are:

4.Pallet Structure & Design

  • Single-Faced Pallet (Skid): Features a top deck for goods with an open bottom or simple runner legs. It is perfectly optimized for manual Hand Pallet Trucks (Pallet Jacks) because there are no bottom deck boards to obstruct or trap the front load wheels.
  • Non-Reversible Pallet: Equipped with both top and bottom decks, but the bottom face is structurally engineered solely for ground contact and stability. It cannot be flipped over to load goods.
  • Reversible Pallet: Features identical top and bottom decks, allowing either side to be used interchangeably for loading cargo. It offers exceptional structural strength but is generally incompatible with manual Hand Pallet Trucks (requires a Forklift or specialized stacker that lifts the pallet entirely clear of the bottom boards).
  • Solid Deck Pallet (Window/Solid Pallet): Features a completely flat, enclosed top surface (highly common in plastic pallets). It is ideal for small, loose boxes or items that are surface-sensitive and need protection from indentations caused by standard open-slat gaps.

How to Choose the Right Pallet for Your Operations

Selecting the perfect pallet for your logistics and warehousing system involves much more than just comparing prices or materials. It is about choosing a critical "connector" that must seamlessly integrate with three core operational elements: your Cargo, your Material Handling Equipment and your Storage System.

To ensure your pallet fleet is cost-effective, safe and perfectly suited to your specific workplace conditions, you can evaluate your needs using this 5-Step Checklist:

Pallets represent a foundational component of modern warehouse infrastructure, exerting a significant influence on entire intralogistics operations across storage, material handling and freight distribution. Strategic load-carrier selection not only mitigates total expenditure and minimizes structural hazards but also optimizes throughput speed.

As your organization plans the deployment of warehouse management systems, heavy-duty racking configurations and forklift fleets, integrating application-specific pallets remains a critical variable for securing long-term operational efficiency.
