• EURO Pallet or EPAL Standard
The EURO pallet (or EPAL) is the standard format across European countries and is widely utilized in global export industries. 3. Pallet Entry Direction
Pallet entry direction is determined by how a lift truck accesses the load inside the racking system. The two primary criteria are:
Two-Way Entry Pallet
Characteristics: Forklift tines can only access the pallet from the front and back. The sides are completely enclosed by structural support beams (stringers).
Applications: Best suited for standard, straightforward racking systems or transport operations where the forklift's direction of approach remains fixed and predictable.
Four-Way Entry Pallet
Characteristics: Forklift tines can access the pallet from all four sides (front, back, left and right). This is achieved through a block-style design (Block Pallet) or by utilizing notched stringers.
Applications: Offers exceptional material handling flexibility and allows for easy maneuvering in tight spaces. It is highly ideal for high-turnover warehouses and is fully compatible with all types of forklifts and hand pallet trucks.
4.Pallet Structure & Design
Single-Faced Pallet (Skid): Features a top deck for goods with an open bottom or simple runner legs. It is perfectly optimized for manual Hand Pallet Trucks (Pallet Jacks) because there are no bottom deck boards to obstruct or trap the front load wheels.
Non-Reversible Pallet: Equipped with both top and bottom decks, but the bottom face is structurally engineered solely for ground contact and stability. It cannot be flipped over to load goods.
Reversible Pallet: Features identical top and bottom decks, allowing either side to be used interchangeably for loading cargo. 1.Application & Environmental Conditions
The characteristics of your cargo and the nature of your storage environment are the ultimate deciding factors for choosing the ideal pallet material.
Export Logistics: For cost-sensitive, one-way transit, paper pallets are ideal for lightweight air freight, provided the cargo is protected from moisture. However, for heavier export loads requiring wooden pallets, full compliance with ISPM 15 heat-treatment standards is mandatory to prevent costly customs bottlenecks.
Food, Pharma, & Cold Storage: These hygiene-sensitive setups strictly require plastic pallets. They are easy to sanitize, resist moisture, chemicals, and mold, and withstand sub-zero temperatures. Opting for a solid deck (flat-top) design prevents dirt and debris accumulation, ensuring compliance with strict sanitation protocols.
Heavy Industrial Applications: For the extreme demands of the automotive or metallurgy sectors, steel pallets or specialized heavy-duty plastic pallets are highly recommended. These are structurally reinforced to absorb heavy impacts and support immense weight capacities without warping.
2.Weight Capacity
This is where the most common operational mistakes occur. When evaluating a pallet's load ratings, you must always differentiate between these three distinct weight capacities:
Static Load (Stationary Capacity): The maximum weight a pallet can support when resting completely stationary on a flat, solid floor (e.g., rated at 4,000kg).
Dynamic Load (In-Motion Capacity): The maximum weight a pallet can safely bear while being lifted and moved by a forklift or other material handling equipment (e.g., rated at 1,500 kg).
Racking Load (On-Rack Capacity): The maximum weight a pallet can handle when placed directly across the rack beams (such as in selective racking) without any center support underneath (e.g., rated at 1,000kg).
3.Compatibility with Forklifts and Pallet Trucks
The bottom structure of the pallet must be fully compatible with the fork tires and wheels of your existing material handling equipment fleet.
If using manual Hand Pallet Trucks or Electric Pallet Trucks: Opt for a 4-Way Entry Pallet or a Single-Faced Pallet (Skid). Because these trucks have small load wheels located at the tips of their forks, using them with a pallet that has closed bottom boards (such as a Reversible Pallet) will trap the front wheels on the lower deck. This prevents the truck from lifting the load and will likely crack or destroy the pallet.
If using Counterbalance Forklifts or Reach Trucks: You can utilize almost any pallet configuration, including Double-Faced Pallets. Selective Racking / Double-Deep Racking: Pallets must feature standard dimensions that match the depth of the rack frame. For example, a 1,000 mm deep rack frame should utilize a 1,200 mm deep pallet to maintain a standard 100 mm front and rear overhang safety clearance. Furthermore, the bottom structure must be rigid enough to span the load beams without bowing or deflecting.
Drive-In Racking: In this system, pallets are supported by side rails rather than full beams. Therefore, pallets must feature highly precise widths and exceptional structural strength. 1. How to Choose the Right Size for Container Shipping?
When operating a warehouse or managing logistics in Thailand and across Asia, selecting the correct pallet dimension is vital. The two most common pallet sizes used in the region each serve a distinct operational purpose:
1. The ISO Standard Pallet (1000x1200 mm): This is the most widely available and utilized size in Thailand. It is perfectly standardized to fit typical industrial racking systems across the country, making it the easiest choice for local warehouse storage and retrieval.
2. The Japan T11 Square Pallet (1100x1100 mm): This square format is exceptionally popular for import/export workflows. Because a standard shipping container has an internal width of roughly 2.35 meters, loading two 1100 mm pallets side-by-side fits almost perfectly (2200 mm total width).
2.Why Can't a Hand Pallet Truck Lift a Reversible Pallet?
A standard hand pallet truck (or electric walkie/pallet jack) cannot be used with a reversible pallet due to the mechanics of the truck's load wheels.
When the forks are fully inserted into a pallet, the small front rollers extend downward to lift the load off the ground. In a reversible pallet, which has identical wooden boards on both the top and bottom faces, these rollers end up resting directly on top of the bottom deck boards rather than the floor. When you pump the hydraulic jack, the rollers force downward directly onto the wooden boards, ripping them apart and causing severe structural damage to the pallet.
Warehouse Expert Tip: If your operation relies heavily on manual hand pallet trucks or electric pedestrian pallet trucks, you must use single-faced pallets, skids, or window/open-bottom pallets. The choice between a 2-way and a 4-way entry pallet depends entirely on your warehouse layout, space constraints and the weight of your loads.
4-Way Entry Pallets (Maximum Flexibility): These pallets allow forklift or hand pallet truck forks to enter from all four sides. This provides exceptional maneuverability, making them the best choice for small warehouses, limited storage spaces or operations with fast-moving inventory where speed and accessibility are critical.
2-Way Entry Pallets (Superior Durability): Commonly known as "stringer pallets," these feature solid wood or metal runners along two sides, allowing fork entry from only the front and back. Because the two closed sides are structurally solid, these pallets are highly robust. They are ideal for straight, heavy-duty lifting, one-directional transport and handling extreme load capacities.
4. How cold can a plastic pallet go in Cold Storage?
High-quality HDPE plastic pallets can handle extreme cold down to -20°C to -30°C without becoming brittle or breaking.
