Electric Forklift IP Ratings: Which One Does Your Operation Need?

Can electric forklifts handle the rain? Absolutely. With the right Ingress Protection (IP) rating, your electric fleet can brave the elements without sacrificing performance. Choosing the correct water and dust proof standard is key to keeping your operation running at its best.

In this article, we will break down everything you need to know about IP ratings, including how to read the codes, what they protect against and how to select the right electric forklift to ensure safe and efficient operations.

What is the IP Rating Standard? Understanding the Digits.

Ingress Protection (IP) is a globally standardized system defined by the IEC 60529 standard. It measures how effectively a forklift’s chassis, frame or electrical enclosures are sealed against outside elements like dust and water.

An IP code always starts with the letters "IP" followed by two digits. Each digit represents a specific level of protection, as shown in the chart below.

Summary of IP Rating: Matching IP Ratings to Electric Forklift Operating Conditions

Each electric forklift is designed to handle different tasks and the environment it operates in determines what level of IP (Ingress Protection) rating it needs. Understanding the two digits, solid object protection and water protection, helps you choose the right forklift for the right conditions.

IP Rating

Protection Level (Solid and Water)

Operating Environment

IP54

Protects against dust ingress and splashing water from spills or minor washdowns.

Dusty environment (cement, grain, woodworking, recycling) - Indoor

For a warehouse, textile, or printing factory environment with dust and chemical exposure but no requirement for water washdown.

IP65

Fully dust-tight and protected against direct low-pressure water jets from any direction.

Dusty and frequent washdown areas (food/beverage, agriculture, fertilizer plants) - Outdoor

For a food manufacturing facility where the forklift handles loading between the warehouse and container trucks during rain and also requires washdown capability.

IP67

Fully dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water.

Extreme wet environments (occasional submersion, flooding risk) - Heavy Duty

You may find the IP Rating on the controller box or electric motor of a premium quality forklift. It is suited for heavy-duty operation and can drive safely through low levels of flooding.

3 Key Things to Check Before Purchasing a Forklift to Ensure Longer Service Life

1. Check the component IP rating, not just the exterior

Some electric forklifts may advertise an IP54 rating, but this often only applies to the truck frame. The controller and drive motor should carry at least an IP67 rating to ensure the electrical system won't fail when the truck is used in moist conditions. Always verify the IP rating at the component level, not just the overall machine.

2. Food and beverage manufacturing and cold storage

These environments frequently face condensation issues, as trucks move between sub-zero temperatures and normal room temperatures. In addition, the truck must be cleaned regularly to meet strict hygiene requirements. For these conditions, consider choosing a truck with at least an IP65 rating.

3. After-sales service and warranty coverage for the electrical system

Beyond the quality of the forklift itself, after-sales service and warranty terms are essential considerations. If a breakdown occurs, you need a provider who can respond and service the truck quickly to minimize downtime. The service team should also provide maintenance guidelines to help keep your forklift running longer in good condition.

Selecting the right forklift helps protect you from the risk of unexpected expenses.

At Jungheinrich, our electric forklifts are engineered in Germany with IP-rated protection on key electrical components, such as motors and connectors, helping ensure reliable performance even in demanding conditions.
